Reading list
Book highlights, mostly science fiction
The majority were library borrows, here's a recent-ish list of some of the better reads for me.
REMNANT POPULATION by Elizabeth Moon, narrated by Suzanne Toren
Amazing job by the narrator on this audiobook, I wonder how long it took to work on the alien language!
~ Sci-fi
THE SHUDDERING CITY by Sharon Shinn
Had a small twist I didn't see coming. I may pick this one up for a keeper copy later on. Borrowed in paper, my library only stocks her in print. I think this was also available on a Kobo Plus subscription?
~ Fantasy
ALL SYSTEMS RED by Martha Wells, narrated by Kevin R. Free
Yup, joined the Murderbot fan club. Love the snark. I went with the library audiobooks first, listening slightly out of order. Liked 'em so much I then followed with the ebooks in proper order for a whole series re-read this year.
NOTE, Fugitive Telemetry should actually be read AFTER Exit Strategy and BEFORE Network Effect.
If you hadn't heard, there's a tv adaptation that will be streaming sometime in 2025 on apple.
~ Sci-fi
FATED BLADES by Ilona Andrews
Liked this short book / long novella and wish the authors wrote more in this universe. And I enjoyed that this was rather standalone, sometimes you just want a one shot thing that isn't part of a large series.
Since I'm decluttering books, I rarely buy print now. But I made an exception for this because I like the cover art, I enjoy their books, and this particular title in ebook is not widely available.
I chanced a print copy due to a Prime gift credit promo. Based on the book dimensions, I hoped the text wouldn't be too small for me. Glad to say it's big enough.
Published by Montlake, an amazon publishing imprint, I found it very interesting that the text is purposely set away from the gutter (inside binding edge) for easier reading. It looks odd on first glance since it's not centred on the page, but I appreciate they did this for reading functionality. I'm not sure I've ever seen this done so asymmetrically on a paper book before.
~ Futuristic / sci-fi action romance
*Amazon kindle exclusive if you want ebook format.
LEGENDS & LATTES by Travis Baldree, self narrated by author
This is exactly what it appears to be (Tor cover) - a cozy fantasy: if you like coffee shops, you might like this. Fun fact, Baldree is an established narrator turned author.
~ Cozy fantasy
PROJECT HAIL MARY by Andy Weir
I went with the library ebook version, and due to the ship diagram included I'm glad I went with this version first. The audiobook gets SO much hype; but to be honest the sample wasn't enticing to me. I've now read both versions, and yes the audio effect is cool.
But, I think this worked better in text, so my first choice was the right one for me. Besides the ship diagram, there are flashbacks that just seemed rather abrupt in audio. There was no audio equivalent of italic text or section break symbols to denote the flashblacks.
~ Sci-fi
*Audible exclusive if you want audiobook format.
TIP: if you're patient or happen to be subscribed, this gets included in some Audible 2 for 1 credits sales. This is how I snagged mine.
